The general objective is to reduce the easily preventable causes of maternal and perinatal mortality. The regular monitoring of women’s pregnancy is necessary to allow for their correct treatment, to recommend delivery under professional care, and for the identification of woman under risk of complications during birth. Training rural health care workers in “Helping Babies Survive Training” including “Helping Babies Breathe, and Essential Care for newborns” will also reduce the development of neurological diseases in newborns and ensure their appropriate treatment in the fragile stages of life after birth. The proposed project adheres to and incorporates the national health programs known as ‘Maternal and Perinatal Surveillance and Response’ (MPDSR), and ‘The Health Sector Transformation Plan 2016-2020’ (HSTP). In these programs the reduction of infant mortality and betterment of maternal health are stated priorities. The proposed project also obeys and takes assistance from the guidelines and recommendations of the international programs under the World Health Organization known as ‘Integrated Management Pregnancy and Childbirth’ (IMPACT), ‘Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illness’ (IMNCI), and ‘Infant Young and Child Nutrition’ (IYCN). The proposed project attends to the problem of uneducated healthcare workers in under-capacitated health centers in rural communities of Ethiopia, a problem which is unfortunately disregarded by the government’s allocation of its health budget, through a professional training and organized coordination of these same workers by Gambo Rural General Hospital.
