The first thing to fight against racism is to recognize it
A #Changemaker in the medical community, Chidiebere Ibe is renowned across the globe for his medical illustrations of Black people.
Ibe has been dubbed «The Black fetus guy» for his illustration of a Black pregnant woman and her Black fetus. He hails from the Igbo ethnic group and is a native of Ebonyi State, Nigeria and was born in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria.
Ibe is a self-taught medical illustrator and began this journey by reading anatomy textbooks, watching videos online, and practicing illustrations using hand sketches and a computer mouse.
But why do medical illustrations need to be more inclusive? 🤔
A 2018 study published in the National Library of Medicine analyzed four anatomy textbooks frequently assigned at medical schools and discovered that dark skin tones were highly underrepresented.
Less than 5% of more than 4,000 images analyzed represented people of color.
Being able to identify the nuances in medical conditions by race or skin tone can make the difference between life and death.
Chidiebere Ibe’s creativity is making a profound difference in how health care is taught. 🤝
His unique journey emphasizes the importance of diversity in medicine and his work encourages others to break barriers.
